(More customer reviews)I have read a couple of other reviews denouncing this reusable filter but I must say they have saved me considerable amount of money . Yes they are a little flimsy and do not want to snap completely closed , but the slots in your filter's well will hold them closed , and that is all you need . I have read from the other reviews that the bags containing the carbon comes apart and I can not comment on that as I threw mine away upon receiving my bio-3 filters as I do not use Carbon in any of my aquariums . These filters are great in that you can use your own filter media . I only use the sponge that comes with this filter and poly-fil batting (the same poly-fil batting that is used in quiltsthat can be found in any box store's craft section for a very small price) and it works great . If you do need to use activated carbon or any other filter media of choice , then I would suggest buying a media bad or two and fill them yourself (though carbon is not requiredto have a healthy and well filtered aquarium ) . As with any filter media the sponge will need to be rinsed out to maintaingood water flow ,just rinse it out in the bucket of old aquarium water while doing your partial water change so you will not kill off your beneficial bacteria and you are back in business .

In fine , I spent $9 dollars on two of these , $4 for a roll of poly-fil batting(which has lasted well over a year and have enough left on the roll to last a year or two more) and I have not once had to spend large amounts of money to purchase replacement cartridges for my Penquin HOB filters .
