(More customer reviews)This is truly a premium canister filter, from one of the oldest and best-regarded firms in the aquarium industry. Offers enough power to even push the water through another small piece of gear, like a UV sterilizer or skimmer, if you don't have much rise in your lines. Much easier to start and to clean than other more basic models. NOTE: this is the freshwater version of this filter, not the saltwater version which contains some components that are less susceptible to corrosion. Also, I suggest that you shop around, as Amazon's price on this item is not particularly low at this time (12/04). For reef tanks, you may wish to check out the marine version of this filter as a supplement to a plenum-based system, such as those described at www.garf.org.

Also, I'd like to urge every aquarist to limit their livestock choices to tank-bred species. There are many species of freshwater AND saltwater fish & inverts that are now being tank-bred, and they are generally much easier to keep alive and healthy (due to being fully accustomed to a tank environment) as well as preventing the devastation of natural areas.
